Together we learn

Welcome

We are a vibrant, happy community school, in the heart of North Islington. Our families come from a very broad range of backgrounds and we pride ourselves on our shared commitment to each other and our school. We care deeply about nurturing our children as individuals, ensuring all can be happy and that all thrive as learners and friends. At Montem we are all about learning and community.

We ensure the highest quality learning experience for all our pupils. Our teachers are exceptionally committed. We are renowned for the quality of our professional development of staff and our innovative approaches to teaching and learning, which put children at the heart of our curriculum. Our success is evident in our hugely improving results. When Tom O’Donnell and Damien Parrott took over leadership of the school, outcomes and progress measures across the school were below national averages. This is no longer the case. Last year our pupils made more progress than average in all core subjects. We’re incredibly proud of this. We’re building on it. Montem is a now a strong school, getting better and better.

We pride ourselves on being a genuinely inclusive school. Our community is fantastically diverse. We aim to help children develop strong personal identities, as well as empathy and respect for others. It is our shared commitment to understanding and supporting each other that brings us together. The work we do around inclusion will give you a sense of our approach. At Montem we welcome all. We think deeply about how to provide a truly fair and enabling experience for every child, family and community who joins us.

Being inclusive is also about the expectations we have of pupils. We believe very strongly that children's ability is not pre-ordained. Everyone can grow and learn with the right level of challenge and a system that builds confidence and resilience. We do very little setting by ability. Instead we give children choice in their learning and provide personalised feedback and support. We challenge children's expectations of themselves, opening them up to possibility and potential.

Our curriculum is very broad and creative. It is exceptional in terms of personal development. We have excellent sports provision and encourage active, exploratory, sophisticated play. Our clubs offer is very broad; we care that all our pupils have opportunity to develop personal talents and interests. We offer optional instrument tuition to all pupils. We provide optional, wrap-around childcare to all our pupils, from 8am to 6pm. We are developing a holiday club too.

We place real value on our partnerships with parents. For us, working with children means working with their family. We seek parents' views to help us inform and develop the quality of our teaching and we make our professional expertise available to parents as openly as possible. We have an active PTA and robust Governing Board that enrich our school enormously. We employ members of staff throughout our organisation from a wide range of backgrounds, reflecting the communities we serve. If English is not your first language, do not worry - we will do our best to speak to you in a language you can understand.

We know that your child's years in Primary school and your relationship with us as parents are immensely important. In many ways, this will be the most formative time in your child's life. We will be working with you to help your child grow from pre-nursery age, through to the verge of secondary school. We consider that responsibility to be a huge privilege. At Montem your child will learn, get creative, make friends, have fun and be happy. You will see their world expand enormously.
