Together we learn

Develop our children's understanding and appreciation of diversity, celebrating commonalities and promoting respect for people's different characteristics

At Montem we are blessed with an incredibly diverse population of children, families and staff. Our aim is to be truly inclusive as an organisation. We want to equip our children to overcome the barriers that prejudice may present them with as they grow. We want our children to make the world a better,  fairer place for all, when they are the adults.

A key aim in our curriculum is to teach children to live well in society.  As part of this, we actively teach a subject we call 'cultural competence'. It is about learning to live positively in our diverse world. It is about deepening our knowledge and understanding of others and developing an increasing ability to empathise with those who are different from us; to recognise our common humanity. It is about celebrating diversity for the ways in which it enriches our lives.

We think about equalities across our organisation and are working with wider partners to improve our understanding and practice.  One of our teachers has taken on responsibility for leading on Equalities. We have audited our practice, with support from Darren Chetty at the Institute of Education, written an action plan and are about to launch our Race Equality Policy.
