Phonics
Phonics is the study of the sounds in words and the ways in which they relate to letters in English. Phonics is the foundation of being able to read and spell. In our schools we teach Phonics in Reception and Year 1, using the Read-Write-Inc. programme. If pupils have not passed the phonics screening check, a phonic based intervention is implemented in Year 2 during Spelling sessions. Our Nursery children practice the prerequisite phonics skills in line with the Phase 1 Letters and Sounds document, developing listening and attention and sound discrimination.
