Maths is an essential subject at Montem. We believe that all our pupils can and should become confident, strong mathematicians. A key element of our approach is our 'challenge system', in which we do not determine the level of work pupils engage with, but let them choose. The children are presented with a range of short tasks that become progressively more challenging. They choose a starting point, regularly checking their answers and seeking support from adults at the point of misconception. Pupils gain confidence, independence and a love of challenge. They receive ongoing, personalised feedback helping them unlock the next level of understanding. The make progress every lesson.
Our teaching is based on the White Rose maths scheme, which provides a consistent line of progression through mathematical understanding, year on year. Maths is taught daily. Each time we introduce a new concept, children engage with concrete resources, before moving through pictorial representations to more abstract thinking. We believe maths needs to be experienced and visualised to be properly understood. Open-ended problem solving, based in accessible, real-life contexts, is woven through our maths curriculum. We expect our children to become creative mathematical thinkers.
We also invest heavily in ensuring children have fluent mathematical knowledge. They complete and are regularly tested on weekly KIRFs (Key Instant Recall Facts), which focus on repetitively embedding the knowledge of times tables and arithmetic facts. This enables them to work competently and efficiently on higher level maths skills.
