In Nursery and Reception classes, children are taught letter formation from the Read-Write-Inc. phonics programme. Children learn correct letter formation using picture mnemonics. Letters are taught in handwriting groups, e.g. ‘around letters’ such as ‘c’ and ‘d’ and ‘Down letters’ such as ‘l’ and ‘m’.
Handwriting is taught regularly in Key Stage 1 (Years 1-2). We use the Penpals handwriting scheme. Children begin to learn to join in the Spring term of year 1. As children progress there are checkpoints and interventions set up to support children who have not met key handwriting milestones.
